Beedie Living is proposing a development at 520 Como Lake Ave., directly adjacent to Como Lake Gardens, the YWCA’s supportive housing facility for single women and their children. The development is to comprise a 26 storey market residential tower, and 7 – 2 and 3 bedroom YWCA townhomes and amenity space fronting on Como Lake Ave. (increasing the number of the YWCA’s supportive housing units to 37). For more information on this project, click here.
The project is a partnership between Beedie Living, the YWCA and the City of Coquitlam, each partner bringing something to the table. It is made possible in part through a transfer of density (i.e. additional suites) to the residential tower. In the absence of a provincial housing program to support social housing construction, this is how new social housing is going to be built – one project and one partnership at a time. There are 2 ways you can support this project:
- Send an e-mail of support to Mayor and Council: firstname.lastname@example.org. In your note, express your support for projects such as this which bring together developers, non-profit organizations and the City as partners to create new social housing.
- Attend the public hearing. The Task Group would like to have a strong showing of support at the public hearing for rezoning this land. This will be an opportunity to demonstrate to both Coquitlam Council and Beedie Living that there is strong support in the community for partnerships of this kind to create new social housing. Task Group buttons (see button here) will be available at the entrance to the Council chambers from persons wearing the button, in order to present a visible show of support in the Council Chambers for this project.
Date: Monday, March 31st
Time: Hearing starts at 7 PM (suggest you arrive early)
Location: Coquitlam City Hall Council Chambers, 3000 Guildford Way
Parking: Parking is available on the ground level of the City Hall parking garage – if no space is available there, more parking is available after 5 PM at the City surface lot to the west of City Hall/RCMP detachment (the spaces along the hedge on the far side of the lot only) and at the Evergreen Cultural Centre parking lot.
